Actually simply using your brakes as little as possible is how you go fast. Brakes are devices that turn motion into heat. I would argue that learning the limits of your tire friction and lean angle versus lateral G's while cornering would help your times more than knowing the limits of your brakes.
But, it's always good to be totally in tune with all of your bike's physics.
Braking as quickly as possible when you have to stop will lead to a higher average speed. Think, if you're going along and you slowly coast to a stop, or you maintain your speed and brake at the last minute, you'll get there faster - that's all brian is saying.
But I agree that the braking technique in the OP receives a practicality factor of -4.4
