The thing about marking the threads is indeed in the Official Instructions, I recall reading that for the firs time 40-odd years ago when I first started working on these hubs. However, in practice I have NEVER found this necessary or even useful. I've done quite a lot of Sturmey-Archer hubs, and never run into a problem with this. I just turn the ball cup backwards while pressing it against the shell. It's easy to feel when the threads drop into place.

Sure. I can count on one hand how many of these I have opened up,so I bow to your much greater experience. The last one I did, I tried the brass punch approach, having munged up the notches in my previous attempts. It worked, but that punch ain't much good for anything anymore.
Another horrible mistake I made on a previous occasion was to cut the hub out of the old wheel before taking the guts out. That was a live and learn episode.
