I just stumbled on this photo and thought I'd post it. After we took that hiking trip I sent the photo around and was swamped with people insisting it was impossible not to have been doctored. It wasn't. We accidently picked a stupidly bad day to do the rim-to-river-to-rim hike in the canyon. That week in Phoenix (we were there for a conference) it never got below 108. At the bottom of the canyon it was officially 120, which Phantom Ranch has frequently reported (but I'm pretty sure they max out the readings at 120).

I barely made it out. This was a life changing moment that made me decide to pursue biking (wheels, man) instead of running. Another hiker (not in our group) died that day of dehydration trying to get out of the canyon. I'm pretty sure we passed him late morning heading up the Kaibab trial (no water on that trail) as we were coming down. Nasty.
It's possible to get that hot and hotter! I was in Baker, Ca once and the temp was officially 131℉
