Awhile back I called licktons (or maybe it was Aebike). I think the issue is that the conversion kits for those years are not available anymore (Branford's burned up). So I think you are basically at new brifters if I remember correctly.
Branford Bike was just purchased and moved to Seattle WA. It will open on Feb, 01, 2007 as retail, mail order and web based business.
As for 8 to 10, forget it. Check out my signature line. I tried and spent a whole lot of money. Finally, I just gave up. Now, I am selling off all my 8 speed parts. If you have to do it, you will need to replace everything except the wheels. Then you have to buy the new cassette hub body and swap it onto your existing wheel. I did and it set me back $110 parts & labor. I still had a 10 year old set of wheels.
IMO, keep your present set up or sell it off. If you want a cross bike then buy the old style compact crank and CT front derailleur. They are on sale now. Your present 111mm BB is actually the correct size for use with a Centaur or Veloce Compact crank. It will be 8 speeds but you can get cross gearing on the cheap. It is a shame to be dragging all those Record parts in the mud though. Good luck
