Since pine is soft, I turn the ID about 0.005" smaller than the OD of the hub shell. I turn a recess into one side for the left lange to fit into. This gives more clearance to the oiling cap. The wide gap on one side was an attempt to avoid making a 2nd block for "Alloy 5 Speeds" where the oiler is in the center. Didn't work, needed larger diameter too.



For a punch I use an old Craftsman screwdriver. They must have spec'ed pretty good plastic back then as I've been beating on it for over 20 years. (with a 4 lb hammer for recalcitrant hubs.) IMHO whatever you use shouldn't be harder than the Ball Cup notches. Easy to touch up the tip on a grinder every few hubs.
