I think the screw-on adapter will be unavoidable. At least I've never seen a compressor that could be used on a presta valve without one.

I found one like this for my wife. Sportsman's Guide used to sell it for about $25, IIRC. It looks a lot like a cordless drill or impact hammer, and uses a very similar rechargeable battery.

The one review says it's difficult to remove from car tires, but we've only been using it on bike tires, with no issues.
