Agreed. That's one thing cycling courses teach and one thing that students remark upon, saying what a revelation that was and what a great difference it made. I've had a student who has been riding in the city for 20+ years, 20 miles RT every day - and he said he learned a few very valuable things in the course, with riding further to the left being one of them. However, I don't know about U.S., but in Canada most cycling courses are aimed at the urban cyclist. Not much attention is given to rural riding - and I do get the impression that the OP is riding in primarily in the country.
