I have a 14 mile or so round trip. I alternate between cages and SPD. For a short commute the benefits of clipless are pretty small, and clips and straps are really not hard to get in an out of with practice. My main reason for going SPD over other clipless systems is the stuff is dirt cheap and you can walk in the shoes. The main eggbeater complaint I've heard is the cleats are soft and wear out easily.
