Eatadonut, Hillrider is right. 8 speed was the first chain to introduce the replacement pin (I first started wrenching on my own bikes in the early 90s), which was supposed to be changed any time you broke the chain. Now I will admit to have ignored that rule multiple times and have never had a chain failure, but being a lightweight with little power output, I am less likely to break a chain than a 180 lb sprinter.
