What were you wearing in the way of socks, shoes, covers, etc? Are you keeping your legs warm?
I rode this evening with my Shimano SHR-130's, DeFeet Aerator, Smart Wool Sock, and Louis Garneau Protects. The Protects are the heaviest I have used so I cannot comment on the ones you are asking about. I replaced my shoe insoles with Toasty Feet insulated insoles $11.99. Tonight was the coldest ride I have done, finished at 28 degrees after riding one hour and 45 minutes. First time my feet have stayed warm.
Try an inexpensive chemical warmer before you buy anything else. I have not used one yet, but this is my first year and I am still experimenting. Most of the riders I talk to say there is no such thing as a warm bootie. Get something with neoprene to keep the wind off and use chemical warmers when it gets really cold. Or go to regular pedals and get insulated winter boots with two pairs of wool socks.
