Do you also have the speed/cadence sensor?

On your graph there are some spots where your speed dropped down to zero. If you do not have, or lose a GPS signal anywhere on your route you will have dropouts in the speed. The speed sensor takes over for the GPS during these times. It also makes it possible to use your Edge on a trainer, since you can turn the GPS off and still record speed and distance.
