They just snap on and off. Not so bad to walk in, much better than than the bare cleats. They are good enough to go into a store and pick up a few things, but not good enough to hike in. MTB shoes are a lot better to walk in. You probably wouldn't want to have the look type cleats as your only shoes on a tour even with the covers.
