I have talked to my orthopedic doctor about these problems and he wants to re-fracture my leg and make it like it was. The only problem is it would involve another external fixator and i would be down for about 3-5 months. And to me thats just not an option right now. I just started walking again in september and i all ready missed a year of college from this, but if i stay in school right now i will graduate in december. So after graduation i plan on having the surgery. The pains i have are basically in my right hip. When i am pedaling i have to dop my right leg down to much that my knee is almost straight, but if i adjust the bike to where this isnt a problem then my left new rises to much and then that starts to hurt. What kind of knee strap do you use? is it one of the petella straps, or a knee brace? I have never tried one, just cause i thought they wouldnt work, but i might go pick one up now. I from what i am told the shorter crank would solve my problem, because it would allow me to not straighten out my right knee so much and it wouldnt cause my femur to rise higher when i am pedaling up. So now my only problem is finding one and not paying out the ass for it.
I use this:

http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/detail?prodid=144054&previousURI=/CVSApp/cvs/gateway/search?page=1^Query=futuro^ActiveCat=65

but our issues are definitely different so I don't know if it would help or not. If I don't wear it, my right knee feels 'loose', and then the pain settles in, but the difference in length for me doesn't affect my pedal stroke because I set my saddle so it's at a height right between ideal for either leg. Your situation is definitely unique and bike adjustments will probably suit you better than a brace... although the extra support may help too.
