I'm up in SF and I'll probably be accepting a job in Sunnyvale this week. Just to test the waters, I decided to ride down the eastern side of the penninsula yesterday (the most direct route). Worst 3 hours on a bike I've had in years-- it's just unreasonable. Escaping SF is the lamest part. The route takes you through two different ghettos full of broken glass, then straight through the middle of the city dump, and the ride doesn't even get ok until Burlingame. Personally, I wasn't all that happy about the Sunnyvale "expressways" either. It's basically like riding your bike on the freeway, with entrances and exits cutting right through your line of travel, and 60+mph, SUV-laden traffic. Maybe if I had gone earlier there would be more congestion, I don't know.

So I'm expecting to ride Caltrain for the most part, and once in a while I'll ride the western side of the penninsula down Skyline from Millbrae (take BART there to escape the city). I'm training for the race season so I'll need the miles. But otherwise I'll take CT down to the Mountain View stop and from there I'll need to find a route that doesn't involve freeway-speed traffic. Shouldn't be too hard.

Why all the hassle, you wonder? Why not just move down and be closer to Si Valley? Well, to put it simply, there's just no place like SF, and I really don't care for the 'burbs. Maybe this new commute will suck the life out of me in a year, but until then I'm staying put.
