yep.... gonna need a battery! and you do need garmin's software if you are tracking elevation... motionbased is WAY off! (way too high of numbers).... so you need to get your ride elevation from garmin's training center (as well as cadence, if you track that)

just be careful plugging it it on the fly... that's how i fried my first one... decided i'd seen enough of the low battery message and plugged it in.... fried the edge! (that's also why i have a back up wired computer on my bike... cuz i don't like doing organized rides without knowing where i am mileage-wise and how far i have to go!)

(it is a cool little toy... but some things about it really ARE a PITA!)
