In some ways maybe, but Powell and Airwalk laid the groundwork. Slick marketing was around long before the skater image was pushed to the general (non-skating) public, but sometime during this period skaters stopped being hassled by the cool kids and became the cool kids.
i think he was referring more to the trendiness of the company. i actually think alien workshop decks feel pretty nice. lotsa pop.
