Interesting discussion.

This year I bought an '89 Burley Tandem that had this gearing setup. I quickly ordered a 39 for it without thinking twice about it. It's got a touring 6-spd rear, so I'm not too concerned. I can always just crank it up to 800W (assuming SWMBO is up to the task)
