When someone puts a phrase in italics, like yada yada yada, there are two hidden "tags" that tell BF to display the text in italics. It's very similar to the html tags used by web designers. The tags are visible if you view the text in the "reply with quote" window. You'll see something like this: {I}yada yada yada{/I}, only they use square brackets like this: [], not this: {}. The first one, with just the 'I' in brackets, tells BF to turn on italics, the second one, with the slash in front of the 'I', tells BF to turn off italics.

When you quoted froze in post 1138, you inadvertently edited out the second part of the italics tag, leaving the first "[I]" in place. Since it didn't have a partner, BF didn't hide it.

You can also use analogous quotation tags to create a quote box like this:

To create that, you type {quote=phoebeisis}Whaaaaat did I do???{/quote}, except again use the square brackets: [], not {}.
