The traditional clippy ones are supposed to slide on from the side, not over the top of the pins. Just push it with a screwdriver.
I have SRAM PC1's on two bikes, one geared, one SS. Love them. Haven't had any problem in over 2000 miles between the two. I take them on and off about once a month to clean the chain. Much prefer using a pair of needle nose pliers instead of a chain tool.
