So, basically from your post, you are looking for something like an inner bash guard? Something just to keep the chain from dropping off the inner chain ring?
There aren't going to be a whole lot of people running anything like that, but that doesn't mean you can't. Don't listen to the weight weenies unless you're a weight weenie. If its a problem that you see you need to fix, then get something to fix it.
You could also use a chain guide and drop to just one chain ring up front...
