My name is Daniel McKewen, a.k.a. “THE GULL.” Seagull Bags (based out of Columbus, Ohio) began as sort of an accident, or maybe a series of random events. I took to bike riding sometime ago. This was the only way to deal with the soaring gas prices. I rode everywhere. It was a beautiful spring. It was great until it rained. The only bag I had was a canvas army bag. I ruined many books, electronics, and just about everything else. After putting up with it for way too, long I decided that I needed a new bag.
It was around Christmas of 2003 when it dawned on me. Every year for Christmas, my friend Sara and I would exchange X-mas art. Since both of us had been riding our bikes a lot, I figured that I would try to make a bag for her, and one for me. After several months of research, hours on the internet, and literally hundreds of sketches, we were ready to give this a shot. It ended up being a lot harder than we thought. All the designs and sewing knowledge came from trial and error.
We began by making template after template after template. The design was the hardest part of it all. Through hundreds of unpaid hours the Gull pressed on. I began sponsoring bikes races and flyer-bombing every bike event within a 100-mile radius. Word of mouth began to spread. By this time, I had a solid design, and also offered many different sizes and options. I began getting a bunch of e-mails, calls, and messages about ordering bags. This hobby was actually turning into something!
This about brings us into the present. Now Seagull Bags is internationally recognized for our unique, and study brand of messenger bags. Our bags have become some of the most sought after in the world. Demand for these bags has exploded, I am now able to make quality biking gear fulltime. What was once a small hobby based out of my basement, has become a sucess story. Seagull Bags now offers a full line of courier bags and bike accessories. Each bag is handmade by me or by one of my highly trained assistants. I use only the most high quality material, thread, hardware, velcro. These bags are waterproof and are designed for riding. I try to make each bag different. When you buy a Seagull Bag, you are getting a one-of-a-kind bag that will last you for a long time. I'm sure you're a great dude in person, and I'm not trying to be any more of a penis than I normally am on the internet, but if you don't want people thinking that all of your design, materials selection, and sewing knowledge came from trial and error, you might not want to post on the internet that all of your design, materials selection, and sewing knowledge came from trial and error. You also say there that this whole thing got started about Xmas of '03, but now you say you've been doing this for almost four years. Which is it?
