Interesting! I bought a set of brake shoes off ebay a little while ago with white plastic guides and they were steel. The seller clained they were Nuovo Record since they were not alloy but I didnt think there were any differences other than the levers. I posted the question more out of curiosity than anything else. I am happy with my purchase but would still like a back up set. The idea of buying another set of complete calipers and taking off the shoes has been running through my mind but the prices for complete sets is still beyond the budget the wife allows.
The white coverings came on cobalto and victory brake calipers as far as I know. Kurt says they appear without rubber coating in the catalogues, but I am sure I have seen them on ebay with white rubber. I too have a set with white rubber and the o-ring is white too. They have standard super record center nuts though not cobalto. This suited my tastes anyway as I was usuing white brakes hoods white toe straps, swapped out the super record derailleur pulleys for white victory pulleys and the lettering on the frame is white. I think it looks good.
