OK, I understand this logic because I use it all the time myself. I justify not wearing a helmet because some crashes only break leg bones. I justify not learning Spanish because some people only speak Swahili. I justify not giving up Jaegermeister because I haven't given up tequila either.
But, I suspect the real answer is that somebody designed a pretty fork and didn't want any lumps or holes spoiling the look. And it is pretty.
