I ride Offroad and 60 miles in winter on a wet (And if offroad muddy) and windy day did not seem sensible - so I did it on the road- on a road bike. That is my factor for this year. In 5 years time I might do the 65 in the cold and the wet and the snow over 2 days, But I don't fancy 2 days of freezing my toes off.

Then there is personal fitness-How am I going to ride my age 3 weeks after my Brain surgery or having my hip replaced, or after having fitted a new saddle again? If you are not fit enough- or strong enough- or just feeling wimpish- Then just get out and ride metric. You never know- It might encourage you to ride the true milage the following week.
I'm going to celebrate the 64th in a few days and I intend to ride my age (just as soon as it's a little warmer) I'm just not into riding the longer miles in freezing weather.
