It sucks that people are afraid to ride in the city. People come into the store all the time complaining about how dangerous it is. I try to tell people that it's not that bad, but the truth is, sometimes it doesn't matter what you do, someone else might do it to you. Though, most of the people I would say, are more worried about "thin tires" and getting them stuck in street car tracks.
When people are looking for a MTB for commuting to work, because it's "Safe" with it's big knobby tires, I often pull out my Surly and say "I don't have any problem with my bike. one break, one gear, narrow tires".
I've yet to decide if that's a good sales technique or not.
