Actually, I would think that MUP's would be far more danerous to women riding along than roads. The river bank MUP I often ride along often has homeless camps nearby. Many released sex offenders can't get housing because of their label, and they become homeless (thanks Congress!). Riding on the MUP is also far more isolating than riding on the road, especially in winter.
I stand by my main point--dealing with honking is a part of riding in traffic for men or for women. I refuse to treat women as children. Adult women are adults. And dealing with the occaisional honk is part of riding or driving in traffic.
I also stand by my point that it's not a persuasive argument to say, "I've had an experience that proves you wrong, but I'm not going to tell you what it is or how it proves you wrong."
As to the argument that striped lanes will decrease road rage, remember when the cyclist got assaulted in Portland by the bus passenger? The UNIVERSAL reaction of non-cyclists was that the cyclist should have been in the bike lane (which was debris-filled) or on the sidewalk. The existence of the bike lane justified the assault to non-cycling Portlanders.
