The only single-destination-lane situation where I ride in a lane-sharing position is in a particularly wide through lane next to a right-turn-only-lane. I want to encourage overtaking straight-through drivers to pass to my left rather than to my right. When lane-taking next to RTOLs (usually with narrow-lanes) I have been passed on my right by through-motorists in RTOLs, where the drivers apparently did not want to slow down behind me and/or merge left. These drivers created danger for other people by proceeding straight through the intersection from the RTOL.
