Yep, you were just in front of me. I was #47. My time was 22:18. I guess I was delusional about the temperature. I definitely started too hard as my heart rate pegged within the first minute. You would think that after 32 years of racing I'd know how to moderate my starting efforts better.
I've also been racing since the later 70's, but just came out of a 10 year retirement. After riding the TT on Dec 10th, my "experienced" plan was to maintain 16 mph on the hill, but I also way underestimated the effect of the cold and pegged my HR about 300 yards into it and my speed dropped on the hill to 11-12 mph. Like an idiot, rather than just shift way down and left my legs warm up, I pushed hard and blew myself out before the top. It took most of the way out to recover and get back up to speed.
I'll be at the Dominguez Hill crit on 1/28 and the Piru TT on 2/4. Maybe I'll see you there. If I can find my arm warmers, I'll also be at Heritage park tonight. It sounds like we've got a few 50+ masters on BF.
