Unless you are racing, a guy your size would benefit from a 28mm tire...more shock absorption, better protection against pinch flats and rim damage, better stability when cornering and in the rain, and better braking. Pros don't race on 28mm width tires? Well, the number of pro riders here at "Bike Forums" seems to range somewhere between zero and none.

Your example is a bit extreme. I am near clydesdale weight and ride on 23s. Maybe it is my frame design, but my road bike is just as comfy with the 23s and my MTB is with 1.25s. I have never had a pinch flat. My team car is always behind me...in the driveway...about 10 miles away.
