10 miles of solid ice today! No kidding. I don't think I had more than 100' of real pavement until I got to downtown Boston.
We had a weird snowstorm last night that dumped an icy rain/snow mix for two hours and then froze solid.
I am ever thankful to Bike Forums for convincing me last year to buy some studded Nokias. I've ridden in New England winters for years but I think if not for the studs I wouldn't have tried it today.
Amazingly I got downtown in really good time (a steady wind was at my back) and I rode on stuff that I know I could not have walked on without falling.
I'm inspired by these winter bikers in Bike Forums.
We're in for the bitter cold much of you in the mid-west have been dealing with this week so this ice will be here for a while.
The ride home with the low slung yellow almost full moon having over the ice covered Charles River was almost too extraordinary to be believed.
