I find being passive on the bike is dangerous.
Absolutely agree! I have commuted for years, and found that the worst instances were prompted by trying to "fit in". You are not a car, why try to act like one? Cars can come from behind at 40 mph with the driver adjusting their hair, which you can simply not compete with. Do I have motorists give me grief for doing 'B'? Never.
I do 'B' for two reasons:
1. Selfishness (why be sitting behind a big heap of steel, belching toxins when you could enjoy the open spaces at the front of the line?)
2. Safety: teh main car I have to content with is the one at the front of the line. I make sure they see me, and 95% of the time I am through the intersection before them. I also take the turn wide to give them plenty of room. If you are sitting in the lane behind a row of cars, and trying to make a yellow light, chances are decent you've got some Barney in a diesel 4x4 (around here) late for work and closing at 50mph, trying to get through the light. Id rather take my chances with the risk I can see and communicate with at the light, than with Clyde the pysycho redneck.

The only time I will take 'A' is if straight-ahead traffic is just too damn fast for comfort, or just to break up the routine from boredom. RE: pissing off drivers, I find that the ones that are the most pissed and rude are when I am doing nothing at all wrong...they are just A-holes or having a bad day. You cant go out of your way to please them...they will never be pleased!
