Bill Murray said it best in Stripes -- "There's something wrong with us, ... very, very wrong with us!!!" Here we are drawing a line in the frost declaring how cold the temps have to be before we cease riding, or riding 200 miles on a trainer indoors or dodging cow manure riding up a gravel pile! All I can say is I'm proud to be one of the strangely twisted.
It was a lovely bright, sunny 9 degrees this morning, with a lovely headwind to frost over exposed skin. That is my new personal best temp. Things generally went well altjhough at that temp I found out my balaclava freezes up so solidly over my mouth that I actually had trouble sucking wind -- well not actually sucking wind, but getting air in. Other than that small wrinkle I was comfortable. It should be colder tomorrow, so perhaps a new record.
Combining last winter and this winter I would say 1 in 5 or maybe 1 in 4 on average would be an extreme ride. We never have subzero temps, but we get lots of ice most years which makes things tougher. Throw in the conditions on the unpaved portion of the trail and bad weather can be a real pain.
