I think that movie made it pretty clear that cars will still be reasonably affordable and practical in a world where oil scarcity makes gasoline cost prohibitive for motoring. Certainly affordable and practical enough to prevent large-scale abandonment of car use in favor of bicycle use.
I think fast electric scooters and electric motorcycles will be more common than electric cars in the near future, although this depends somewhat on the ease with which apartment and condo dwellers can recharge them. I suspect that people who give up cars due to high gas prices but don't particularly enjoy pedaling would be more interested in electric scooters than bicycling.
