I saw this before, but either that is a giant bell, or it would be a very tiny compass that would be quite hard to read, there is no big north arrow so you have to read the letters to figure out which direction to go.
They work fine to have a gerneral idea of direction. It isn't like you are on a boat and need to take accurate bearings. I can usually tell general direction by the sun, but on an overcast day one of these is a help.
