So... Here's a tip for everyone: Before you spend several hours building a studded tire, when the thought crosses your mind to check to see if the tire you've selected will actually fit your frame-- don't just skip that step and assume it will. Grrr. Now I have a very nice 700 X 38 studded tire which is pretty much useless!

I guess I'm gonna use my mountain bike instead. Any thoughts on how well "city slickers" perform with studs on the ice? ( I've got 2 sets of those laying about) or should I go out and get some knobbies to start with?
