+1 for Dahlonega. Living in the north suburbs of Atlanta, you're closer to great climbing than you are in Charlotte. You can easily work in Atlanta, and live less than a hour from really great riding.
While Western North Carolina is great, Asheville is a bit farther from Charlotte.
The riding in and around Charlotte itself might be better, but proximity to the Mountains I think is in Atlanta's corner.
