Pretty much any decent road bike in the $700 range in good mechanical order is all you'll need. What you'll see is anything from that to bikes that are more expensive than the average TDF racer gets.

Last week, I raced on a Gaint TCR Team Advanced, with Zipp wheels and a Powertap SL. My bike while toward the high end, was far from the most expensive.
