I've seen several people on this forum admit to driving their roof-racked bikes into the garage roof, but zero who were rear-ended. Statistically seems safer for your bikes to not roof rack them, but this may not be applicable to you.

We need more details, like how many people and bikes you need to take with you on a normal drive. For two adults and two bikes, any sedan is fine. You could take four adults and four bikes without much luggage if you have a good rack.
