actually from what i remember in the semester of geology that i took from a professor who went back and forth between teaching and looking for oil for big oil companies, more than 99% of fossil fuel comes from plant material. not surprising considering the amount of plant matter that comes and goes (think forests covering whole continents) compared to the size of animals.
