This is most interesting! One of the other members who drops in here steered me to a mixte frame that has that same outward bend in it. I still haven't gone and checked my dusty rose mixte, but I don't remember that bend being in it. It does not have a date stamp on the bottom bracket, though. It looks as if I will have to sit down and get the particulars on the componentry for the record.
The explanation for the 'bulge' was that it was meant to clear the chain, apparently.
