I've picked up a 12V Xenon strobe emergency flasher, x-tremely bright, at Radio Shack for $8 (in the "alarm equipment" section.) Weatherproof, large polycarbonate yellow cover. Tested beautifully. I've seen relatively tiny LED's made for bikes that were the same price. Looks almost exactly like this:

Also, at Auto Zone, I picked up a red tail light for $5.50. Also tests nicely for brightness, but doesn't come close to that xenon strobe. Not only can you see the strobe from every angle extremely well, it casts such a powerful flash that everything around it lights up. Now, I'm ready to join the extraterrestrial experimental cow abduction team!
