Maybe because Brompton's (and the British court system's) concept of intellectual property goes beyond patent rights? (Mercbike)

It may not be too expensive to design and manufacture a bike like Brompton's. However, many companies could not afford lawsuits from Brompton in multiple countries which claim that they've violated Brompton's trademarked image, patents-be-damned.
