Your descriptions sound like a malfunction, most likely related to 1 or both of the friction plates. I would try to get it repaired or replaced. If you want to continue troubleshooting on your own, try this:
  1. Align the fixed friction plate. If it can't be aligned, it's probably a build or assembly defect.
  2. Lubricate the axle with a light oil or metal lubricant. This allows the moving friction plate to slide side-to-side (changing resistance) more smoothly.

Thanks for info. I did try lubing the axle with tri-flow and it worked good for a bit, but then started doing the same old thing. Tri-flow is a light weight oil and seems to hold up well so I thoght it would work o.k. Does it help to lube the bearings and tracks?

I really think it has to be an issue with the either the manufacturing tolerence on the axle/shaft or friction plate. When the inner plate begins to disengage, it starts to wobble which makes me think that either one of the bearings is not retracting correctly or the plate is getting stuck on the axle. The pulsing I'm feeling I am sure is from it wearing unevenly since it is wobbling. I have recieved an email from Blackburn and they said that something is not correct and asked if I could send it in for repair. I responded that I would appreciate it if they would just send me either a new trainer or resistance unit, and then I would send this one back. Then I wouldn't be without one for two to three weeks. The weather her is crappy right now and there is no way riding outside is safe or feasible.

As far as the preload spring goes, I guess I couldn't if it was correct when I recieved it. I rode it for a while and then decided I would take the RU apart to see what was up. The spring popped out and I didn't see which way it was oriented, but I know it is correctly now.
