Rather than sheet metal screws, make yourself a 1½" square of 1/8" aluminum plate and drill and tap it for machine screws. Then use short screws that won't protrude out the back. The plate might be uncomfortable unless you tighten it enough to really get it sucked into the insole, but it will still be better than screw points.
