I remember the odd/even too from the 70's. IIRC my dad saw it coming and filled up the big van we had, then siphoned the gas off to keep his small Renault and Vespa running for quite a while. I just kept on riding my bike and making a few bucks on the side delivering groceries for the local store...that was back when we still had stores the delivered
