Just sitting on the trainer and doing either in an unspecific manner will have very little effect on your level of fitness. To make the most of training time you need to do a program of drills designed to produce the results you are looking for. You may not want to ride at higher cadence but you definately want some high cadence drills in your training program. Jump sprints are the best way to increase cardio capacity to mention one.
