I believe the plain/regular/standard Marathon
IS the model that comes with tread pattern HS 308 which has been superseded in many sizes by tread pattern HS 368. Prior to the HS 308, the standard Marathon came with tread pattern HS 270. All have served me well.
You are correct about the Plus, Cross, Plus ATB, Racer, Slick and XR models, they are not "just" Marathons. They are extra cost models that have other features that some cyclists might find worthwhile..
