I ride a Cross Check. Here's a thread I started on the Marathon Plus, and here's another thread on the same topic.

I love the Marathon Pluses, but they don't meet your definition of "light weight." If you want light weight, I'd go with plain old Conti 28's or 32's. I used to use 2000's or 3000's, and they were fine, but far from bomb proof. Add a kevlar tire liner for puncture resistance. It won't be as tough as the Marathon Pluses, but it will be a lot lighter. I prefered the liner over a tire with kevlar because when a tire got punctured, you'd have to buy a whole new expensive tire. When you use a liner, you buy a less expensive replacement tire.

I think the ideal commuter tire is 28 or 32, but others disagree. As tires get wider, they give you a smoother ride and can better handle bumps and potholes. As they get narrower, you can go faster, but you will feel the bumps a lot more.
