Can't really tell about the general population b/c many regulars haven't chimed in yet, but this thread really goes to show that many of us are not just in it for the fashion. Given only one bike, we would gladly choose function over form.
I would transform my old fuji touring bike into a 1x6 with full fenders. Not really a race bike, but awesome on the commute and I've won some stuff on it as a fixie.
