It does make sense, but using a mountain bike for my commute is allowing me to find more and more shortcuts to avoid roads with heavy traffic. All of these shortcuts are on dirt/gravel and anything with semi-slicks could probably make it through these areas if you're careful, but it's much easier and more comfortable on a rigid mountain bike with fat (1.95") semi-slicks.
